Jazzfarm 25th Birthday

Posted by: | Comments (0)

What a night! Thanks to all of you who came and shared 25 years of The Jazzfarm. We counted 147 through the gate and the last of you departed on Sunday afternoon. We’ll be hosting other parties, don’t you worry, but this one is a tough one to follow. Thanks to Jonathan for the photography, BJ for the food, Mike for the tunes and Derek for the coffees.

Jazzfarm 25th Birthday

150 of you came round to one of the greatest parties we've ever hosted. Mike Lesar spun 7 hours of tunes, BJ cooked up a storm and Derek kept us all up an running with his coffees. We'll party again one day, but this was a tough nigh to beat.

Chapel Of Sacred Mirrors

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Whilst on our visit to New York for the United Nations Special Assembly On Drugs, we managed to get away from all the drug speak for some calm and introspection. We took a train a couple of hours up the Hudson River from Manhattan to a small village with no shop or cafe for breakfast. Small place indeed.
After a 30 minute walk up the hill and through the woods we arrived at The Chapel Of Sacred Mirrors, Alex Grey’s visionary art retreat. It’s very cool to meet your hero and so it was that day. Alex Grey’s art features a lot of the walls of the Jazzfarm and it was such a treat to see his paintings as originals in the ‘flesh’ AND we managed to get a signed print of St Alfred – his tribute to Albert Hoffmans 100th birthday..

Visit From An ETV Doccie Crew

Posted by: | Comments (0)

March saw the Jazzfarm being visited by a really funky young doccie crew filming a pilot for ETV. The subject? cannabis and creativity. We let the crew loose in the gardens at the Jazzfarm and they didn’t know where to point their cameras next. For 20 years we’ve used cannabis to create at the Jazzfarm and it soon became apparent that they’d come to the right place. Any time, any place – we love talking to the various film crews that visit us. This visit was particularly interesting though because of it’s specific subject matter. Hmmm, time for a smoke and a bit more creativity….

Winter Maintenance

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Winter is a time for repairs and general upkeep here at the Jazzfarm. Many of you will instantly recognise our lounge in the photo but you will have never seen it so empty. The bi-annual floor sealing and polishing mission is always quite a logistic. If you know this room, you know how full of stuff it normally is.

It’s always worth the hard work in the end

We spent the last week grouting and replacing cracked tiles in the highest impact area in the building – the stoep. It always amazes us how big the stoep area actually is without all the furniture. Routine maintenance is the key to keeping the Jazzfarm up and running. The main building is over 60 years old now, but still standing up to the fiercest of summer thunderstorm squalls.

The Sacred Geometry of Aloes

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As of August 2013, the Jazzfarm had not suffered any real frost damage all winter. The short term positive effects of Global Warming perhaps. One consequence of the mild winter has been our aloes all flowered and weren’t decimated one night by sub zero temperatures. Some plants we have never seen in full cycle before.
The Jazzfarm bees have been feasting on them for weeks. Aloe flavoured honey will be a thing to look forward to in spring.
The sacred geometry of Aloes from budding to flowering to fruiting has been a joy to watch, and well worth capturing on ‘film’.

August Sweat Lodge

Posted by: | Comments (0)

We have just managed to squeeze in a Sweat Lodge in August. We don’t know where the time goes and our weekends seem to get fuller and fuller. So on the last day of the month, the 31st, we intend lighting the fire and inviting you all round for another purifying two hour session in the darkness.

Jules will be pouring this Lodge. It’s been a while. As this lodge structure evolves it seems to us the ideal number is 26 passengers, so we’ll stick to that number. So book as soon as you can, the places get snapped up quickly. We’d like to enter the Lodge at 6pm, so get here for 5pm to enjoy some refreshments, the Jazzfarm garden and spend some time collecting your thoughts and intentions.

Supper will be served on completion of the Lodge. There will also be a ‘Giveaway Blanket’ ceremony before supper. Please bring a small something or other to give to the blanket and received another something or other from someone else. Make sense?

Price for the evening is R200. You can pay by EFT (preferable) or cash on the night is all good too.

See you there!

Portrait of Rosendal

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Myrtle and I managed to get away from the Jazzfarm madhouse for a few days before my birthday. Our primary motivation was to take our office into the quiet of a small Free State village for some serious work with little or no interruption. It worked – nobody knew us, few people rang us and we ventured out rarely. We would have needed double the time away to achieve our goals, but nevertheless it was excellent to get away from the pace of Jo’burg and walk in the hills of the eastern Free State.
We’ll remember Rosendal fondly and will surely return.

Lizard Weather

Posted by: | Comments (0)

And still it rains on the Highveld. a blessing for the dry winter months ahead…..or not?
I had a conversation with a man the other day who was very keen on the weather and meteorology…He said that Southern Africa is about to experience it’s wettest winter in living memory….something to do with El Nino’s sister El Nina.
That would be a strange sort of havoc for Johannesburg. Imagine it being  like a Cape Town wet winter in Jozy..Euk!……and below freezing temperatures….
May as well go to Aberdeen.

Vergenoeg Hiking Trail

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Had a blast hiking up onto the Magaliesburg ridge on Sunday……
Perfect weather for an autumn day out after lots and lots of rain. Calm and misty, like hiking in Scotland for the most part of the ascent.
As we sat on the edge of the escarpment eating our brunches, the Cape Vultures same to visit us en mass. Effortlessly  gliding through the updraughts and thermals checking us out as if we could be large dassies….
The clouds parted and we got some great views of the north west up to Pilansberg and beyond.
It had been over 5 years since I’d been on this particular trail and it was a pleasure to share it with the group this particular sunday. A huff and a puff in places but generally an easy walk through some spectacular indigenous riverine forest.
A great way to spend a Sunday, and some awesome pachamamma connections with the ancient Magaliesburg ridge…

The Reservoir Cottage

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Many of you will remember the old water reservoir next to the Jazzfarm windmill.
More than 10 years ago, I knocked a hole in it and put a door frame, then 9 years ago I put a window frame.
We’ll I finally got off my arse and put a door in the frame and glass in the windows.
We’ve now got more beds for psychonauts and assorted other guests. It’s dorm style and stylin’!
We are also test driving a fresh off the boat from Bejing low pressure solar water system. Cheap, no frills and it’s seems to be really effective. Got to run round in the shower to get wet with the old plaas pressure,  but hey!

The main motivation was to get more beds for our upcoming Ayahuasca and San Pedro weekend.
When they come down to land, some lucky travellers will have the opportunity to test drive our new accomodation AND have a good run round the solar shower!
Can’t say better than that now can we?
